Metals are rarely present in the native state
(i.e. not combined with another element) in nature. However the case of
copper or gold can be mentioned.
But it is not the case of iron which has a high
affinity with oxygen and finds a balance by combining with it to form oxides.
Iron, pure or allied, tends to oxidize or more generally to corrode to achieve
a state of balance, in most of the planet's weather conditions. Very early on
in history,
man discovered and started treating the phenomenon of corrosion.
The
different types of corrosion
suffered by the steels used by ADIAMAS
mainly belong to the category of
water corrosion. These environments are not very
harsh (weak acidity or base). According to their temper and type, stainless steels have different
sensitivity to corrosion,
which comes in various forms of which the main ones are cavernous corrosion
and
pitting corrosion.
